It is my experience that many teachers leave giving homework until the very end of the lesson. this does not give enough time for the dyslexic child to write it down let alone ask for clarification if needed. It would help enormously if all teachers wrote it on the board at least 10 minutes before the end of the lesson, leaving time to deliver a full explanation of what was expected. Alternatively, a photocopy of the homework would be ideal and could be handed out to each student towards the end of the lesson - again leaving time for explanation. Some teachers say they are available at lunch or break to go over homework and if all teachers added this I am sure it would give reassurance to many children particularly those who are just beginning at secondary school which is often daunting.
In the SEN dept we also offer a lunchtime homework club where at least 2 TAs are on duty to help SEN pupils with homework. We find this is a very successful way of ensuring our students understand and complete homework on time.
