I have found that another way of helping a child's confidence of phonics is to play a rhyming game. for example,if i give the child the word 'table', he has to find words ending with the same sound i.e, table, label, cable etc and he enjoys it a lot and when ever we meet for the one-on-one sessions, he insists on playing this rhyming game which seems wonderful, as it enhances his motivation and confidence in learning.
