Hi! This one usually works for me:
Get the student to look carefully at the word you would like them to learn. Ask them to pick out any word patterns e.g. are there any smaller words within the word? Or try making a sentence out of all the letters, e.g. Potato - Poor Oliver The Adder Tackled Oranges. Try making spelling as much fun as you can to hold their attention.
