Hi,
I've done my NVQ 2 and 3, a course on emotional literacy and worked in a mainstream infant school supporting children with special needs, I have recently moved to USA and as I cannot take paid work until I have my entiltelment to work card I have volunteered in a special education unit. They are happy to have me, and keen to employ me when I'm allowed to work. The children's requirements are greater than special needs in a mainstream environment in the UK, but the NVQs give a solid foundation to your basic skill set, and your experience will help. I'd recommend getting yourself on some specialised courses (autism, SED, dyslexia etc) if you can, there should be a folder somewhere in school, and your Head shouldn't have any objections to you going on the free ones at least ;0) and completing your NVQs in Learning Support. Special Needs schools often want volunteers too.
