Karyn is right, the world of special needs is overwhelmingly staffed by women. I recently attended an excellent NASEN conference in Newcastle, and out of 200 delegates, four were men. I happen to think that this a great pity, particularly when dealing with dyslexic older boys. I am a male H.O.D. in a special school, and I have noticed on a number of occasions that older boys generally don't like being "mothered" as they see it, by female staff (although I will point out now that my female teaching assistants are terrific. Older males (rather than younger ones, who can be seen as rivals or posing a threat) tend to be seen as grandfatherly figures whom teenage boys tend to get along with. This is especially true in an environment like ours, where staff don't wear suits and ties and everyone is on first name terms. I appreciate that changing the ratio of women to men in special needs is not going to be an easy or quick thing to do, but I feel that it would pay dividends with many teenage dyslexic boys.
