To help a dyslexic child learn the sounds of the letters a multisensory approach is the best way forward. Using an alphabet chart where the child can see the letter next to a picture or holding an object which begins with the letter sound, creates a strong visual memory. Saying the letter sound out loud as well, gives an auditory memory of that sound. Also actions for letter sounds can be used as in the Phonics Handbook by Sue Lloyd.
However, actions, pictures or objects must have meaning to the child and connect to their culture and background if they are to successfully learn the letter sound. Stowe(2000) suggests letting the child choose their own objects as they will connect to that object which which help them memorise the sound. My youngest daughters, brought up in Asia used different words to learn sounds compared to their older sisters . Noodles, fried rice and sushi were foods they related too because they loved eating them!
Finally, to create a memory of the feel of the letter the child can make letters out of materials such as play dough, clay or pipe cleaners.
Using all of these strategies gives a multisensory learning experience to a child.
