Dicey Spellings is a fun game that suits the dyslexic learning style. It is particularly good for odd bods (words which don't match letter-to-sound patterns) such as 'many' 'said' 'important' 'special'.

Write words out on individual cards.
Learner looks at a word and becomes a Spelling Detective.
They ask the question 'Where would I make a mistake?'

Using 'important as an example:
The mistake might be 'in...' instead of 'im...'
In this case they make themselves a memory prompt which links the word's meaning with its spelling. For example,
'I'm an important person'.

Then they draw a picture (or doodle) which links the word with its memory prompt (they draw a picture of themselves as an important person ... one may draw themselves as a sports champion, another as a political leader ... depends on what THEY think of when faced with the word 'important').

Then the word and its prompt is moved out of sight.

Then throw a dice and perform one of the following tasks:
1: write word with your eyes closed
2: write word with your opposite hand
3: write word in bubble writing
4: spell word aloud backwards
5: write word using multi-coloured letters
6: write word with similar meaning

With a spelling list of 6-8 words, learners work their way through the words 3 or 4 times in a week to get their memory prompts established.

Pictures go straight to long-term memory so a picture or doodle is very important.
The different activities above use multisensory learning, with a particular focus on developing visual memory traces (you cannot spell English if your visual memory is weak).
Children find this game fun, different, flexible (they can change the activities if they wish or throw the dice again if they don't like the number they throw)and they have ownership through being a spelling detective and drawing their own pictures.

Other prompts for 'important' (depending on where their mistake might be) could include:
'An ant is an importANT animal' (without ants garden seeds would not be moved around, or ants farm aphids so aphids think they are very important etc)
'Plymouth is an imPORTant port' (again, let the child pick which port they want ... if they think of Plymouth as a shopping centre, rather than a port, then Plymouth is not a good choice for them.)

Hope this helps. Have a go and let us know how you get on.

Best wishes,
Sally
