18 years is like its very own lifetime...and animals have that way of stealing hearts and moving right into them and taking them over in a way so hard to define, while huge in that elusive definition.
They're our confidantes, our comfort, softness in a hard world, reminders of innocence, the understanding catchers of the tears we wouldn't shed in front of anyone else, the holders of our secrets, looks that you could melt right into, antics that rival the best comedy routines, our friends, our children, our furry soulmates...they give without really taking, and they bless our lives in so many ways.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your dear friend. I'm a strong believer in the thought that Heaven couldn't be just that if it wasn't there for our animal friends just as it is for us...and legend has it that their animal souls travel there on rainbows, their direct road in since they are such a big part of innocence defined. I think your Teazer might have sat with you for a while on the porch last night, sat with you during that storm, waiting for her morning rainbow, and loving your for her wonderful lifetime of your love and friendship, for seeing her for all that she was and all that she will always be as one of your beloveds.
Just as I believe that my dogs, Buttons and Ember, were among the crowd at the gate waiting to meet my mother, I think Bob's been waiting for a cat with great conversation skills to warm his feet, one he'll take care of for a dear friend.
My heart goes out to you, my friend...and your words are a beautiful tribute to your friend.
