Nobody from our neighborhood ever touched Charley again. And anyone from outside the neighborhood who tried had Bruce to contend with (and anyone else from the block who happened to be around).

Mary Jo and I are starting on our fourth decade (32 years)of friendship. Over a quarter of a century of that friendship has been without any ugly surprises from one to the other. Bruce and I became friends, too (not in that way, if you're wondering), but nowadays we mostly keep touch through Mary Jo.

Instigator kid and his family left town that same summer amid whispers, just among the kids, that instigator kid had molested three of the little neighbor kids. I blew it off back then, but later I wondered.

Charley went from being my little brother to being my best friend, chief defender, and bullshit detector. We have never spoken about the flagpole.
