ITA re most of the most-taught male writers and even some of the lesser-taught male writers, but I think Shakespeare wrote some extremely strong female characters (Juliet, Cordelia) and some extremely weak male characters. My problem was/is that most of the strong females were ultimately doomed by their very strength. Not always true for the men. My brain is dead - I remember liking other authors' female characters, but I don't remember whose. Can you think of any?
