In reply to: 's message, "PTV - False and/or misleading information" on Wed, February 04 2004, 11:56:43 PST

Thanks for sharing this information. PTVA has performed a great service all of these years and deserves a tremendous amount of appreciation from all the people in Grant County who benefited from their selflessness and dedication.

Thank you.

Elsewhere on this site, someone raised the advent of digital and analog broadcasts beaming to earth from satellites, which is the method satellite dish TV broadcasts. Most of these signals are beamed encrypted and encoded.

Much like PTVA used translators to beam the signal from a tower on earth, the satellites are nothing more then a powerful translator located in a fixed location in orbit around our mother earth. Galaxy 10R is located in orbit at 127 degrees West. This is one of several satellites that beams down hundreds of TV signals, most encrypted and encoded. Galaxy 10R and a few others also beam un-encoded un-encrypted signals which are already received by millions around the globe with an MPEG 2 Receiver Dish System, and are known as FREE-TO-AIR (FTA) signals. These MPGE 2 systems can be purchased legally on the open market, and reception is legally received by anyone who gets such a system for as little as $200.00. This is far less then the cost of a TV set.

The next battle for the airwaves will be FTA vs. encrypted signals.

The trend is for more and more TV broadcasters to uplink and broadcast un-encrypted signals for many good reasons which can be found on many sites on the internet. Anyone who is interested in this subject can find the information by a key word search: FTA, Free To Air.

This is a remarkable story of how we got to 2004. It portrays a reality few were paying any attention to, as the years rolled past us.

The truth is that community support, or lack of it, had little if anything to do with the changes we’ve endured day in and day out over the past 50 years.

While it is true that our airwaves are overcrowded, it is also true that there are more available TV channels then anyone could ever watch. Technology is now available for anyone as remote as Rimrock on Blue, the flats above Ephrata and Soap Lake, hidden spots in the Grand Coulee, and any remote place miles from power lines, to receive thousands of TV stations from a number of satellites beaming to earth. This new telecommunications revolution has not even begun.

The earthbound translators may be on their way out, and with it TV reception. This, however is a temporary condition. These translators are being replaced with more translator satellites every year broadcasting their signals to earth in such a way that they can't ever be taken away again by anyone.

The FCC selling the frequencies to the highest bidders, is not the issue. The real issue related to their sale of these frequencies is the FCC’s total disregard for millions of people who deserved to be given more notice to plan for choices. The FCC’s shortcomings will be addressed in due time.

People have paid little attention to the coming changes. Bad as it is at the moment, there are alternatives which all of us can join hands on, and step into the future. For the time being, we have lost TV reception, and we are losing the Peoples’ TV Translators.

We have dozens of translators in orbit around mother earth, beaming down thousands of TV and radio channels – anyone can truly tune in to for FREE. All that is needed, is the equipment to receive them.

When you go fishing, you need equipment to catch the fish. When you want to go to Wal-Mart, you need a car to get you there. To get TV reception, you need a TV. To tune in to radio, you need one to receive it. To get TV reception, you need a receiver that will pick up the signal.

That’s all. Better days are ahead.
