Kneeling beside the bed he is wary that the blade may have cooled but the steam rolls over the edge, like the smoke on a blazen rooftop. In a quick seamless motion he presses the blade to the gash for several seconds, the smell is wretched and he pulls away. Looking down at his 'work' hoping to hear something from the others, he had done no doctoring in his life, this would be the first next to bandages and splints.
