I have worked with and judged many pageants and American Coed is one of my favorites. I thought it was very well run and their staff was excellent. They took the judging process very seriously and the judges were not siblings of their staff.

That pageant is definately not rigged in any way.
I notice that when people's children don't win they often cry scam or claim that it was rigged and that's just wrong.

The judges are required to take notes and to explain the scores that they gave to each contestant. If points were deducted all of those reasons are listed on the judges score sheets.

The contestants are encouraged to view the comments that the judges wrote so that they know what they have to improve.

Most people do not take advantage of that.

All pageants are different. American Coed puts alot of focus on interview skills.

Someone said a 3 year old that they thought didn't do as well on stage as some of the other contestants shouldn't have won.

Based on what they saw they declared that it must be rigged.

They have no place making any assumptions bc they didn't see the whole pageant.

The interviews are done in private. Not on stage. The interview score is one of the most important scores in the pageant so if a contestant doesn't do well in that area there is no way they will win the pageant no matter how well they do on stage.

When interviewing 3 year olds the judges usually ask questions like "do you have a pet? Tell me about your pet, What is your favorite bed time story? Why is it your favorite? Tell me about it, etc."

They judge the child on how she answers the questions and her personality while she is answering.

They do that with all the contestants asking age appropriate questions for each age division.

I had to comment on what was said bc I couldn't believe that people were claiming that this pageant was rigged or based on looks. Most pageants are based on looks. That is normal for pageants. But this pageant is not based on looks.

If you or your child is competeing in an American Coed pageant my advice would be to practice your interviewing skills. And make sure to sit like a lady. Feet crossed at the ankles. Don't slouch, etc. Make sure your clothes are clean and ironed. Do not look like a slob. and most importantly, remember to smile and make eye contact with the judges.
