I could make a stingy Scotsman joke about him waiting for a letter to steam the stamp off, but being of Scots ancestry myself I wont. Anyway, 20 cards for a half what? half a crown, half a sixpence, half a pound of sprouts, what?

1/2 surely means 1s. 2d. (i.e. one shilling and "tuppence", or two pence if you prefer)
