There are many many different types of hpv. They have isolated low risk types and high risk types. The high risk types are often the cause of abnormal cell changes on the cervix, although I believe low risk types can do this as well. To find out, you can ask your doctor to do an hpv test. While it likely won't be able to tell you the specific type of hpv you have, it can identify whether it is low or high risk.

Not really. I haven't really researched this a whole bunch, but I *think* they can do a colposcopy of the penis and biopsy any lesions that may be present. This is really something I don't know a whole lot about, but I'm sure if you google, you can find out more information.

>3. If I have high risk HPV and they suggest
>cryo-therapy will that enable me to have children?

You can have cryo-therapy, laser, leep, cold knife cone biopsy and go on to have children. with each procedure there is a very small risk of complications that might make it more difficult to get pregnant or carry a child to term. HOWEVER! my thought is they would not be doing these procedures if there was a large risk to fertility. There are several women on the gyn-gals private group who have had LEEPs/Cones and gone on to become pregnant, and carry a child to term.

>4. Does HPV ever really go away?

There are two schools of thoughts on this. Some will say it clears your body, others will say it will become dormant (like a herpes virus). It is really up to each woman to do her research and decide what she personally wants to believe. You will find research/information/opinions in support of each view.

>5. Will I always be able to spread HPV to my sexual

>this.
>
Abstinence? Again, you have to decide what you believe regarding clearing the virus or it going dormant. Likely in either scenario you wouldn't transmit the virus, HOWEVER, that is ONLY my opinion.

>6. Can HPV be passed through a condom, or through oral
>sex?
>
Yes. while condoms do assist in decreasing the transmission of the virus, it is possible for the virus to transfer to the partner through skin to skin contact and tiny microabrasions on the skin.

Try not to be too terrified (believe me, we all start out where you are right now). Arm yourself with knowledge, and keep asking questions. The more you learn about this virus, and the pervasiveness of it, the more accepting of it you will be.

I encourage you to join our gyn-gals private message board (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Gyn-Gals/). There are many gals there who have hpv, and who have gone through the same emotions as you have.

So okay one last thing Im still really not clear on...If I've had this for years now and just never knew it...but still havent gotten genital warts from it...will I ever get them? And just because I dont have them does that in itself mean that I have a more serious form of HPV?

Thanks so much for being so understanding.

Visible Genital warts of the vulva are thought to of low risk HPV. Your Pap smear take a sample of the cervix and screens for high risk HPV types. Testing positive for HPV test with the sample take of the cervix does indicate you have one or more high risk HPV types of the cervix.

Your vulva may also contain the HPV virus…but screening was not done of the vulva. At this time there is no standard screening done for the vulva.

Here in the US there is no approved test for the male. A good screening of your partner’s private parts should be done. For the male this is done via vinegar wrap and then high resolution manifestation. Many men with high risk HPV show no symptom…some do however. Research shows that your partner and you share your HPV types.

Cryo-therapy is the most non-invasive of procedure…and the it comes with little risks ….but with most procedures you will most likely be able to become pregnant…

There is no cure for HPV. Most likely we carry the infection for life…but most women’s immune system keeps the virus in check. With any new sex partners you can acquire other HPV types.

At some time (no one can tell us when) we probably will not share our acquire HPV types….it is important to tell all new sex partners of your HPV infection…

Condoms do not prevent the spread but condoms do help in the regression of the virus and do provide more protection to your cervix. There is not any 100% guarantee that you will not share your infection with your next sex partner.

If you do not have HPV of the oral cavities you will not spread the virus through oral sex. Giving oral pleasures to a man with active visible warts does increase your chance of an oral HPV infection.

No one can give us a guarantee that you will never have warts of the vulva. The HPV virus can live in the genital tissue for years and then show or it may never show. Most of us carry more than one HPV type, so there is a possibility that you have both low risk and high risk HPV types. There was not a test done on the vulva..the HPV test done on the cervix was positive for one or more high risk HPV types Most HPV types never show any symptoms.
