*A carcass still holding
life lays silently near the outskirts of the meadow, a
rasping moan sounding deep within the nearly quiet
body still in possession of a ghostly soul. The blood
bay stallion lays sprawled on his side, pelt matted
with blood, broken jaw hanging at a grotesque angle.
Coat so thickly covered with the dark red carnage,
sticky and warm, no trace of the white blaze upon his
face shows through the crimson. The butchery leaking,
burning, into his eyes, the taste filling his mouth
with each hacking cough, his vision floats dangerously
between two states of being, one earthly, one divine.
Teetering on the edge of death, dragging on air that
cannot support him, he is seized by a violent seizure
of shuddering, the torn remnants of his skin hanging
loosely, obscurely, off of him in all angles and
directions. But no pain holds him. Disembodied faces
float through his mind, wavering closer, disappearing.
Sal and Pepper and Kite were there, Blissful
Sensations, Glittering Gold, Aesop’s Favorite Fable,
his children... he had loved them all so much... but
two of the three mares that had made his life continue
no matter what had left him. Dark coat snarled with
the thickening gore, breath gurgling with spatters of
blood, he grows quieter, eyes fainter. And in his
weakened state, he had been attacked by a stallion
twice his size and much more powerful, and could not
fight back. He was alone... no, there were things
flying about him...he was flying... Bodiless
faces shriek like harpies and swoop towards him.
Terrified, bloodied eyes torn and flashing with fear,
he chokes as another spasm of coughing wracks his
body, blood erupting from his broken mouth.*
