" If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." So you see he will forgive, but we need to confess them to him and only him. Now, about refraining from sin read James 1:21 "wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and recieve with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls." So yes we do need to stay away from sin and recieve God's word which is able to save our souls. You must realize though that we do not have the strength to refrain from sin within ourselves.
