Subject: My election memories--tell me yours

My memories about election parties

The first election in which I took a great interest was the 1960 Nixon/Kennedy race. I was twelve and my family was mostly Republican so I was for Nixon. We watched the returns come in and ate popcorn. I was disappointed.

The next election night in 1964 when Johnson was running against Goldwater, I was chairman of the Taylor County Young Republicans in Abilene, Texas. I spent election night in the home of Billie Sol Estes on the shores of Lake Ft. Phantom because I was dating his daughter and damned if I wasn't disappointed again. When I was young and foolish, I was young and foolish.

By the time the 1968 election rolled around I was in college and no longer a Republican but a member of the SDS. I had been in Chicago snorting teargas during the Democratic convention. I heard the dull thud of billyclubs on noggins. I saw no point in votng. I was too disillusioned.

And in 1972 it was even more pointless, so I did some more cocaine. The Nixon landslide was as disappointing to me as was his loss in 1960. I took great delight in his downfall two years later.

By 1976 I was steeped in the romance of the French Revolution because I was playing Marat in Marat/Sade, so I was glad to see the defeat of the old regime. It was the first election of my life in which I was pleased with the outcome. To this day I think that Carter was the most admirable president in my lifetime.

Then came the political Dark Ages of the Reagan years and Bush I. I think those twelve years will be looked upon as the ruination of our Democracy and our economy.

I was spared further disappointment in '92 and '96 because I thought Clinton was a suitable leader.

The 2000 election was a disgrace to our system. The outcome was even worse.

Will I be disappointed tonight?
