I'd rank a Fischer, or Kasparov or Karpov or any great chess player a lot higher than the typical beatnik poet or minstrel. In fact, many, if not most great, authentic writers were decent chess players.

To name a few: Pound, Nabakov, Lewis Carroll, Bertrand Russell. Some of the beats pushed some pawns--Neal Cassady supposedly was a decent chess player (there is a scene in a Kerouac novel --On the Road or Dharma Bums perhaps-- where Dean and Sal play chess.)

I believe there is a pic. of Ferlinghetti playing in a North Beach cafe.

But peasants usally can't play chess, and they are unlikely to have taken the GREs either.
