Really, you are somehow obsessed with this politeness-civility issue. When you read ( you do read sometimes don't you?) your favorite novelists or journalists or poets, do you judge them on whether they are adhering to your "niceness code"?? Ever read Mailer? He's one of the most violent writers I have read, but some of his stuff is decent (Executioner's Song), and occasionally the violence and obscenity is essential. Violence, obscenity, crassness, injustice, cruelty, nature red in tooth and claw: real writers address those topics. Is Ellison's Invisible Man nice and buddhistic? No. What about the Litkicks pantheon: Bukowski? You think he was some peaceful polite dude? I think not; nor were most of the other beats and freaks you flount....
