It was a terrorist attack. Four passenger planes were hijacked. Two of them struck the World Trade Center. One struck the Pentagon. The last one crashed in an unpopulated area. It should be possible to get more information by going to CNN.com. If necessary, you could try asia.CNN.com, that site might be better accessible for you. The main site was unreachable for a long time, but it works again now.

It was almost certainly the worst terrorist attack ever, with a deathtoll exceeding 1000, and probabbly much higher.
