The attic was how she remembered. Dark. Dusty. And very lonely. Moonlight made the place especially eerie as it spilled through the large window. Just one more nightmare. She thought and gasped. In the center of the floor, in front of the window, was an old blanket. She gingerly picked it up and pressed it to her cheek. The memory flooded back.

A little girl sat wrapped in a blanket in front of the window. It was a dark night. She had woken up crying and couldn't fall back asleep. Just then a little boy, older than the girl, came up the stairs and saw her. He ran to her and kneeled beside her. His arms wrapped around his little sister and he whispered gently in her ear. "What's the matter, Red?" The little girl just shook her head. The boy carefully pulled the blanket off of her then wrapped it around both of them. He pulled the little girl into his arms. "Did you have a bad dream?" The girl nodded and started crying. "I hate them" She whispered.
"Who?" The boy questioned softly, stroking his sister's red hair.
"Mommy and Daddy." She answered, so bitter for one so small.
"Why, Red?"
"Cause they died. Why did they hafta die Ryan? They were a mean mom and dad but they didna hafta leave us like that!" The girl was sobbing now.
Her brother started rocking them back and forth in the moonlight. "Hush that, Red. Hush." He scolded gently and continued to rock her. "They weren't the best but they still loved us."
"Did not!" Protested the girl, though was calmed some by her brother's rocking.
"Did so! 'Member how Dad use to take us to the park when he wasn't drinking? And Mom and us use to sing silly songs and have pillow fights? They sometimes were ok. Remember the good things, Red. That's what Gram says." The brother and sister comforted each other throughout the night and fell asleep there in the attic.

Vicki draped the blanket around her shoulders and sat in front of the window. "Remember the good things, Red." Her brother had said. She closed her eyes and remembered her Grandma's smile, her father's laugh, her mother's sweet perfume, and her brother's innocent blue eyes beaming at her. The memories mingled together in her mind. She didn't know how long she was sitting there and suddenly noticed the hot tears streaming down her face. "I miss you so much, Ryan." She whispered as she stared at the man in the moon looking through the window at her. If there was a ghost in this house, it would probably be her ghost. Something died inside when her brother had vanished.
