[hehe]

Vicki couldn't sleep. It had been three hours since her and Martin had turned in for the night. Moonlight streamed in from the window and spilled onto her face. She snuggled closer to Martin and sighed. She spent a long time staring at his handsome face and gently touching his cheek, hoping not to wake him. He was wonderful. She couldn't have been happier. Yet she sighed again. It was this house. It was too full of memories. Silently she pulled away from her lover and sat up in the old bed. The house was silent except for the howling of the wind and an occasional groan from the house when it shifted in. She laid down again and snuggled close to Martin's warm body. She tried to sleep but couldn't. Finally she couldn't take it anymore. She sat up again and slowly crawled out of the bed.

As a little girl, she memorized every creaking board in the house. She use to crawl out of her bed and sneak down to the cookie jar. Somehow her Grandma always knew she was awake and would find her there in the kitchen with a mouthful of cookies. Instead of scolding, the old woman usually made some hot chocolate and they would giggle and eat cookies late into the night.

A tear slid down her face as she moved silently out of the room. She stopped and looked back at Martin's sleeping form, hoping he wouldn't notice her gone. Sleep well, hero. I'll be right back. She promised silently and crept into the hallway. At the end of the hall was a pull-down staircase that led to the attic. I can do this. I just need to chase away one more nightmare. Vicki took a deep breath and started up the stairs.

[sorry for dragging you all over the house but she is in the attic now. hehe]
