It didn't take long for knights to react. Johan had taught them how to deal with unruly vegetation, and that was to use fire. Very hot fire. Not only that, but knights were targeting the officers of the human army.

The Assasin vine died, even as Dias's blue eyes narrowed and he began to look for those within their walls that had turned upon them.

Those he found, he left twitching upon the ground.

It didn't take the 12 knights that had assaulted the vine terribly long to destroy the assasin vine; conjured oil and fire was a frighteningly effective method of killing things, even as that same method was turned upon the humans rushing the gate.

The gate that was being closed.

Other knights were doing something the humans had not expected; they took to the air, far above the range of arrow or spear, baskets full of caltrops were dumped in motion across the human forces, causing massive panic as streams of death rained from above.

That was the problem with fighting enemies who could fly when you couldn't.

Worse still for the human were the forgottens who marched to the gate as they had been streaming in and set a line, setting themselves loose with spinning wings and lethal blades upon one human after another; the knights were vastly more prepared for an assault than even the leaders of hogoromo had expected, and certainly, the humans had not suspected how well trained the holy knights had become since Johan had taken up the reins of their training.

Each knight held a certain grace, a deadly ease, and an unflagging stamina, all beaten into them by one of the hardest taskmasters of any military, and humans fell back in shock as the most elite knights, in frontal combat, ripped them apart as though they were rank amateurs.

And then the catapults were brought to the forefront, Trebuchets of enormous size, but these held no massive rocks, rather, they had spiked caltrops loaded into them to scatter at high speeds, decimitating human ranks.

Only now, at the incident at the gate, the knights were on their guard against threats both internal and external.

And the humans found that out of chaos, the knights were quickly forming ordered ranks and lines, human charges against any such lines only left more human corpses on the ground.
