Subject: How to spike my hair- Im having problem

Hey guys im a male and my hair is about 2.5 - 3.0 inches long. Im having problems spiking my hair. When i take a shower my hair is damp and is curly, i cant get my hair staright and spkiey. Im trying to throw my spkies back, like a blowout with a tape-up on the sides.
When i appply gell my hair wont make like distinctivce spikes ill just point in the direction ill try to twist my hair into. When im twiting my hair with gel on my hands it doesnt foprm spikes they just like fall and dont make strong individual spikes. Why
