If I remember rightly, the clothes washer we had was a Hotpoint, which was sort of like a white enameled upright tank on casters that one rolled from somewhere out into the middle of the kitchen, plugged it in, and ran an intake hose from the sink faucet into the tank, and then used it as an outtake drain hose from the tank back to the sink drain. It had swivel ringers mounted on one side of the top of the tank, but it was operated by a manual crank. Before that, maybe they DID pound clothes on the rocks. I DO remember that my grandmother used a washboard in her home.
