".....the Klu Klux clan went up there. Don't know if that was true or not but we never went there. So you see I also missed out on that. Where did you go to get there"?

Yes, Marie, it's true that the Ku Klux Clan set fire to crosses up there during the war. I remember standing on upper Benkard Avenue, across from St. Francis Church, and looking at a cross burning up there. I was about 8 years old and it scared me to death. I asked my father what it was and he simply said the fire was set by very bad people but it was not for me to worry about it.
We used to climb up from Lake Street near Muchattoes Lake. There was a path, a little to the right of the hill, that led right up to Spy Rock. The view from there was spectacular! You could see the whole city. The kids from my neighborhood would sometimes build a small fire and fry hot dogs and potatoes up there and stay the whole day. That was in the late 40's, early 50's. We were very careful to put out the fire and clean the whole area before we left. We met lots of kids from New Windsor that way and became friends. Those are some of my best memories. To this day, whenever we pass Snake Hill, I get a tremendous nostalgic feeling..........
