Happy Thanksgiving!!
I have great memories of some of my teachers starting with Vail's Gate School - Mrs. Schmelster (kindergarten), Mrs. Hayes (1st gr.), Mrs. Love and Mrs. Bargeisen (2nd gr.), Mrs. Eames (3rd), Mrs. Guice (4th), and Mr. Macy (homeroom, Science), Mr. McDonough (Civics/history), Mr. Moore (English) and Miss Frankos (math) in 5th. I have a particularly fond memory of Mr. Macy - he was the first teacher who talked about 'classic' books. I remember him bringing in one of the original Frank Baum 'Wizard of Oz' books on which the movie was based. It sparked a lifelong interest in writing, and how narrative fiction was adapted into film.
I left New Windsor near the end of 5th grade, without my parents giving the school any word of our leaving town. I always wondered what I missed, and what the teachers must have thought about my sudden long term absence - I always felt as if I left something unfinished.
I recall the school Principal, Mr. John Sloan, actually coming to our house once when I tried to play hooky, and driving me to school. That's something you would never see nowadays...
