- The spotted colt is awakened by the pale light of dawn. He glances at the still form of the sleepy mare. Knowing she is wakeful, but unwilling to disturb her, he lopes quietly toward the ocean. The surface of the water, where unbroken by the crashing waves, is a shimmering, lustrous gold. Toby smiles, stepping into the silvery foam of a retreating wave. The cool water laps over his dusty hooves, revealing their odd vertical stripes. Unsatisfied, he takes a few more steps. The golden water now laps against his chest, darkening his predominantly-white coat to a smoky gray. He feels strangely alive as the waves crash a few feet before him, drenching him in seaspray. -
