CHRISTOPHE SOUMILLON is looking forward to riding one of France’s best horses in one of the races of the season after the filly Mandesha was on Wednesday ruled out of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday.

Instead, the top-class filly will contest a race two hours before the Arc but arguably just as full of spice as the card’s centrepiece ?the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera featuring superstar performers Alexandrova, Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun as well as Group 1 winners Nannina, Irridescence and Dionisia.

Mandesha’s selected target - worth €250,000 compared to the Arc’s purse of €2m - leaves Soumillon free to partner Shirocco the Arc, and he could not have been more happy with the outcome of deliberations by the Aga Khan, whose daughter owns Mandesha.

Soumillon said: “Shirocco has the perfect profile for the Arc and is at the peak of his strength.

“He is a very tough individual and has already beaten most of his rivals. The decision not to run Mandesha is a good one. She is a filly with an enormous amount of class but still lacks a little metier to take on horses like Hurricane Run and Shirocco.?

Coral have priced up the Opera and make Alexandrova a 7-4 favourite to win her first meeting with older horses after devastating wins in theOaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire

Ouija Board, who will be reunited with Frankie Dettori, is a 9-4 chance ahead of Mandesha, rated a 7-2 chance.

Alain de Royer-Dupre, who trains Prix Vermeille winner Mandesha, still has one Arc contender in Pride, and said: “We have chosen the Opera because Princess Zahra wants to keep Mandesha in training as a four-year-old and we thought the filly was a little tender to take on males at the top level at this stage in her career.

“It also could be soft ground which wouldn't be suitable for her. It's difficult to know what the ground will be like on Sunday as some rain is forecast.?

Of ten declared runners in the Opera, the Jean-Claude Rouget trained Germance will not run after a last-minute change of plan.

The filly’s trainer said from Marseille on Wednesday: “Germance will next be seen out in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Keeneland on October 14.?
