Phoenix Reach to be given midsummer break

by Neil Morrice

PHOENIX REACH, who suffered the latest of a string of reverses when struck into in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, is to be given a midsummer break before embarking on a campaign geared towards a crack at the Melbourne Cup.

Having overcome a late injury scare just to make it to the Newbury showpiece, the Andrew Balding-trained five-year-old returned with a badly gashed near fore after running disappointingly behind Azamour at Newbury on Saturday.

"As well as the cut he had quite a lot of bruising on the leg and we were concerned that it might affect his programme," said Balding. "Thankfully he seemed a lot better today and I'm not putting it forward as an excuse for his run."

Setting his sights on a strictly international campaign for the remainder of 2005, Balding added: The aim is to go for the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup and if he does happen to run before then it will be in the Man Of War at Belmont.?br>
Aidan O'Brien is still struggling to decide if King George fifth Ace was fully effective over a mile and a half on Saturday.

"Ace is in good form following the King George," O'Brien confirmed on Monday. "It's very hard to know what to make of his performance as far as getting the trip was concerned. We'll see how he is later in the week before thinking about plans."

One possible target for Ace is the Baileys Irish Champion Stakes, for which both Cashmans and Paddy Power on Monday favoured Azamour over Motivator when issuing match betson the contest. While Cashmans offer 4-7 about Azamour, Paddy Power are even shorter at 4-9, with the latter firm quoting Motivator at 13-8. Cashmans make the Vodafone Derby victor 11-8.

很欣賞練馬師包義定(Andrew Balding)所講那句:"我不會以鳳凰烈焰在King George VI陣上的小傷作落敗的藉口." 輸得起誠大將也 (NT)Lincoln
