Motivator looks set to get his man

by Jon Lees

FRANKIE DETTORI is all set to team up with Derby winner Motivator after Sheikh Mohammed on Sunday agreed to release him from commitments for Godolphin so that he can ride in the Baileys Irish Champion Stakes a week on Saturday.

With his retaining stable without a challenger in either the Leopardstown feature or the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster the same day, following the Goodwood defeats of Layman and Centaurus over the weekend, Dettori has secured special permission to take over on the Epsom hero.

The ride became available when Motivator's regular jockey Johnny Murtagh collected a 21-day suspension that ruled him out for the colt's first outing since losing his unbeaten record in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes.

In Murtagh's absence, Dettori was immediately the first choice of owners the Royal Ascot Racing Club for a race he won four times in five years from 1998 to 2002.

However, his availability was confirmed only after Centaurus's defeat in Saturday's March Stakes - which ruled him out of consideration for the St Leger - and Layman's eclipse in Sunday’s Celebration Mile, which nulled any prospect of him heading for Leopardstown.

Confirming the arrangement on Sunday, Dettori said: "I think we have a couple of runners on the day but I think Sheikh Mohammed is going to release me to ride Motivator.

"He is a Derby winner and who doesn't want to ride a Derby winner? It's a shame we haven't got a horse to run in the St Leger or the Irish Champion Stakes. I've got a very good boss and he's let me off. It will be nice to ride Motivator."

Dettori said that he was unlikely to visit trainer Michael Bell's stable to sit on Motivator before the race, adding: "Apparently, Michael says he is a bit quirky, and he likes tokeep the lad on him - so be it."

In a dramatic twist on Sunday, the association was almost over before it began, with Dettori - still without a winner since returning from a broken collarbone after eight weeks' absence - being found guilty of careless riding on Halle Bop in the Seafrance Fillies Stakes at Goodwood. It was an offence that resulted in a two-day ban (September 8 and 9), while three days would have ruled him out of the Irish Champion Stakes.

Dettori is set to have his first Group 1 race-ride since returning from injury in the Grosser Preis von Baden this Sunday.

Godolphin could saddle both Cherry Mix and Mamool in the 12-furlong race, in which the former will attempt to return to the form which saw him finish a close second to Bago in last year's Arc de Triomphe - following which the Dubai-based operation purchased the son of Linamix.

The four-year-old has something to prove after flopping in both his starts at the Dubai Carnival in March. He has recently been cutin the betting for this season's Arc, but Crisford on Sunday played that down, saying: “Frankie rode him in some work on Saturday and said he's just a galloper, although I would say he is going a lot better than when he had his first couple of runs for us and didn't show anything.

“We are looking at the Baden-Baden race and will leave him in, while we will consider both this race and the September Stakes for Mamool. We will make a decision later in the week. It's more than likely that we'll go to Germany with Cherry Mix and that Mamool will attempt to repeat last year's win in the September Stakes, but we need to see what is in each race before making a final decision.”

Warrsan is on course to attempt to win the Grosser Preis von Baden for the second year in a row, trainer Clive Brittain revealed on Sunday.

"He's in good form and worked well with Hattan last week, which was pleasing to see," said Brittain. "Everything is ready for him to head back to Germany again next month."

Brittain added: "I think this will be his last season as there has been quite a bit of interest in him as a stallion. He comes from a good family that includes Needle Gun and Luso. I will be sorry to wave goodbye to him - he's been a star."
