Motivator works well enough under Frankie

by Martin Kelly and Tom Peacock

MOTIVATOR continued his preparations for the Baileys Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown when working under new big-race partner Frankie Dettori in Newmarket on Friday morning.

Dettori has come in for the mount aboard the Vodafone Derby winner after Motivator's regular jockey Johnny Murtagh was ruled out through suspension.

The Montjeu colt, trained by Michael Bell, impressed Dettori when working over a mile ahead of his clash with Azamour in the Irish showpiece on September 10.

"There is a week to go and Michael felt I should sit on him before I ride him," Dettori told At The Races.

"Basically it was a routine work over a mile on a watered gallop and he worked OK.

"Hayley Turner was leading me but it was moreor less a routine work and we didn't want to pull the guts out of him with a week to go.

"I spoke to Johnny Murtagh and he can whip around in the morning, but he was quite good and knew what he was doing.

"I guess the horse is maturing a bit but he's always going to be a bit sweaty - that's part of his character. He was very good in himself and knew exactly what he was doing.

"We know exactly how good he is. He has won the Derby by five lengths and I was more interested in his well-being and how perky he was and he seemed to be in exciting form.

"Obviously it's no walkover. Azamour is a great horse and I am sure it will be a fantastic race."
