I am sitting in my parents family room catching up on all the posts that I couldn't find time to read while in San Francisco. The computer I gave them several years ago is now ancient. They never use it. I had to set it up again. Their in-box has 2654 messages they will never read.

As they scurry about having conversations only people who have been together for fifty years can have, I am reading these beautiful sensuous posts. They are oblivious to what I am doing on that machine. If only they knew what their son is involved in. I feel like a kid sneaking a smoke in the bathroom. Some things never change when you go home.

Chicago is two thousand miles from my life in San Francisco. The temperature is a balmy nine degrees with a wind chill factor that has to be below zero. If only I had brought my khaki shorts! Yet the posts (and a glass of courvoisier) warm me. They remind me that I have another family in San Francisco. One that by slow degrees has adopted me and I them.

I recall the week at Santa Clara, the intense meeting of teachers on Saturday, the dinner, opening of presents and the house meeting where I was gently reminded to get telephone numbers when I register people. Mercifully, Nicole volunteered to assume that duty. I have no doubt she will be much more adept than I. I remember feeling like a kid who had failed to take out the garbage. I would not have been suprised to have someone tell me that if I failed again, I would not get dessert. I felt very connected to everyone. As I said, some things never change with family.

Reading the posts from Chicago and thinking back on last week made me realize how fortunate and rare it is to have two families. One in which I will always be the oldest son, no matter how independent and successful; and no matter what my failures, always loved. The other in which I have joined with others on an adventure of intimacy, pleasure and exploration few have imagined or experienced. A family composed of men who are brave, intelligent and adventuresome and women who possess those qualities as well as being beautiful, sensuous, and disconcertingly perceptive.

Sometimes one needs to step back and realize all that one has. So, my wish for you is a joyous and sensuous week. I will enjoy my time with my family and equally enjoy knowing that I have another one to go back to. But beware, I will have to make up for my missed quota of dates!
