For genuine quality shots, you will need an SLR. Any of the top cameras such a Nikon, Pentax or Canon will suffice. Personally, I use Canon exclusively and recommend them to you. I would never use anything else. They are workhorses; they take a beating and keep working. If you have the scratch, I would begin with a Kiss or a Rebel which are between $500 - $900 with a lense. If you are looking for a less expensive shooter, buy yourself an IXY or a PowerShot. They are between $100 and $200. You can get a good deal at Walmart on any of them according to their website. A lot of the small, non-SLRs have good telephoto and macro capabilities and take great images.

Canon may seem expensive, but remember that quality always costs less in the long run. Whatever you buy yourself, stick with the companies that specialize in cameras, i.e., Canon, Nikon, Minolta or Pentax. Off brands are a waste of money. They take so-so pics, but their color sensors are lacking in comparison with the big names.

Good luck with it.
