The horror movies you mention are the some of the most hilarious. And the original Dune was the greatest.

As far as history goes, I have to say that I like military and political biographies (books here) - how certain personalities with their insight and will become the axis on which history turns. Mostly Western civilization, although my interest is essentially armchair in nature. Roman... American...
