Subject: Old Wall System

Has anyone heard of an old commercial drywall system (probably from the 70's) that used steel channels to butt the drywall sheets together. (not a steel framing system) The 8' sheets of drywall slid into 8' channels screwed to a wood framed wall. They were screwed to the steel then a black plastic strip was used to cover the screws. No mud required - however the drywall also seems to have a unique texture that is noticeable when patched with mud.

I have inherited an old office building and this is how a majority of the walls are finished. I would like to update but fear I will have to gut it all. Suggestions?
