What is approved: The FDA has approved the use of Lamictal (lamotrigine) tablets and Lamictal (lamotrigine) Chewable Dispersible Tablets to help delay the time between mood episodes among people undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder.


Lamictal is already approved for use in the treatment of epilepsy to prevent seizures.


Side effects: In rare cases, Lamictal has been associated with severe and life-threatening rashes and hypersensitivity reactions.


Other, less serious side effects may include: dizziness or drowsiness, blurred or double vision, nausea, headache, or lack of coordination.


Precautions: Lamictal is approved for use in conjunction with standard therapy for bipolar disorder. The effectiveness of Lamictal for acute treatment of mood episodes has not been established.


When will it be available: Lamictal is already available on the market as an antiepileptic drug.


Basis of approval: The FDA based its approval on the results from two 18-month studies that showed that Lamictal was superior to a placebo in treating patients with bipolar disorder in delaying the time between mood episodes (depression, mania, hypomania, and mixed episodes).
