I am glad that you asked. Actually there is a heaven and hell but they are not just one place. Each heaven and hell is composed of astral realms or dimensions. There are an infinite number of these realms. After a person dies and the destiny of the soul is to not be reincarnated, then the soul is attracted to the astral realm that corresponds to their level of consciousness. The realms and there corresponding level of consciousness are as follows:

lower astral realms (hell) - below level 200 - form and formless
middle astral realms (purgatory) - level 200 to 599 - form
higher astral realms (heaven) - level 600 and above - formless

From the arm test, it has been determined that the hells are pervaded by a feeling of hopelessness and a complete separation from God. Each lower astral realm has a demonic spirit that denies the existence of God and rules over the realm. The mindset of each life form is to only live for the ego and it's cheap satisfaction.
The heavens are pervaded by a complete oneness with God. The domain is formless because that is the domain of God Himself. In this realm everyone exists to simply experience God and raise one�s own level of consciousness in order to experience God more fully.
The purgatories are in the domain of form and pretty much self explanatory in their nature.
The good news is that when in an astral plane it is still possible to raise one's level and reach heaven. The bad news is that the people in the hells probably won't even want to.
