Heya relevant people,

You may have seen a few posters around the Queer Room and other parts of Union House about funding submissions to attend QC this year.

The posters stated that the funding would total $150. This figure was not the confirmed amount, but rather was to encourage students who might be interested in attending to begin putting a submission together while we negotiated how much of the Queer Department's funding would be allocated to
QC.

It now appears that the amount individuals will be allocated for the costs associated with the conference will be significantly higher, and the final amount will be dependent upon the amount of submissions we receive.

Out of the same line item in the budget we will also be granting money to the national travel pool to ensure that regional campuses will also be represented. A significant contribution towards to publication of Querrelle has also been set aide.

In line with most other campuses, and discussions I have had with other Victorian queer officers, students who want funding are being asked to make a submission. There are a variety of reasons for this:

1. We have a finite budget, and as much as it would be great to send everyone who wanted to go, this is not a possibility (I sound like a liberal)
2. This being the case, we believe that people who are able to demonstrate particular need for funding should be prioritised.
3. Students should be selected in the context of the conference at hand. The Conference is officially titled "Yes, it's f---ing policial!", and while this is not our sole factor in assessing submissions, it will factor heavily on our decision.
4. We believe that funding should be allocated in a transparent and centralised way to ensure that all interested students have the capacity to apply. Delegating the decision as to who should get funding to another group
on campus risks the process being decided in a way which is unfair.

A few submissions have been received. If you are interested in coming and have not formally applied, we are asking that people indicate their interest in attending along with a short submission as to why they should be sent. Something concise and informal will be more than fine.

In no one is in the office when you bring your submission by, then slide it under the door. Alternatively, you can email me on this address or d.mcdonald@union.unimelb.edu.au. Make sure you include your contact details so we can get back to you.

Remember: Deadline is 5.00PM Wednesday 2nd June....

Cheers,

Dave Mac
