The Sexuality Law Reform Committee is currently trying to organise a debate on same-sex marriage. I'm keen to receive as many suggestions as possible. Here's an outline of what we have planned:

SPEAKERS:

Unfortunately, Michael Kirby is unable to speak on this issue. He sent me an email stating that, as this issue may one day come before the High Court, he would not like to be disqualified on the grounds that he had made a pre-judgement.

However, Senator Brian Greig (for legalisation), Assoc. Prof. Sheila Jeffreys (against legalisation), and Jamie Gardiner (for legalisation) have all expressed a keen interest in participating in such a forum. I have also contacted the Liberal Party and the Catholic Church to seek representatives to speak against legalisation.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? There were some suggestions made at the Committee meeting on Monday, but I haven't been able to locate email addresses for those people, so please pass those on if you know them.

FORMAT:

I plan to hold the debate here at the Law School in the big lecture theatre (GM15, I think). I want it to be open to everyone, and I want to invite all law students, any local gay and lesbian rights groups, and the media (what are your thoughts on this?).

I want to alternative between speakers for and speakers against. I thought that there could be six speakers (if we can get that many), and each would speak for about 15 minutes. We could conclude the evening with questions (from the audience as well as among the speakers).

DATE:

I would like to hold the debate early next semester. Is this a good idea? I was thinking about holding it two or three weeks after classes resume. This way, no one has exams to think about and everyone will have settled into their new subjects and be keen and available to help me out!

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

Other things to consider are:
- Advertising the event
- Whether we provide drinks and nibbles
- How we set up the theatre
