Hello:
A while back I pestered you re finding a period photo (ca mid-l870 to mid-l880) of William R Shafter, who became colonel of the 1st Inf in early l879. This request, I found, was a bit late for your period of interest.
Now I have a request closer to home.
I am in need of the birth date of Kinzie Bates, an officer in the 1st Inf from Aug. 1861 until his death (as senior captain)on Feb 20, 1884 (in Detroit--some sources give Lansing, MI).
Here is Bates's military bio from Heitman:
From Michigan (probably born in Detroit), served as Pvt and Cpl in Co A of the 1st Michigan Infantry from May l to Aug 7, l86l. He was then commissioned a 2nd Lt in the 1st U.S. Infantry (early August 6l); promoted 1st Lt in late Nov 6l;advanced to captain Mar l5, l866 (brevets for services at Corinth, MS and siege of Vicksburg),as noted, died Feb 20, l884.
Heitman, however, does not give a date of birth--and I sure could use this information in my research. Can any of you help?
