Will Smith Hit With Lawsuit From Former Beat Box
(1/8/02, 12 p.m. ET) -- Superstar rapper-actor Will Smith, currently starring in the biopic Ali, is being sued by a childhood friend--his former beat box and collaborator Clarence "Ready Rock C" Holmes--for $5 million in back royalties. Holmes alleges that he co-wrote DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's Grammy Award-winning hit, "Parents Just Don't Understand," from the group's breakthrough 1988 set, He's The D.J., I'm The Rapper.
Holmes performed as a beat box with Smith and his partner DJ Jazzy Jeff in the late '80s and gained notoriety for his ability to replicate the theme music to Sanford And Son.

Holmes is listed as a writer on the group's debut 1987 set, Rock The House, and his attorney Jeffrey Servin maintains that Holmes's name was included in the early production and publishing deals the group signed, entitling him to a share of the profits.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince released a total of five albums before disbanding in 1993, including 1989's And In This Corner..., 1991's Homebase, and 1993's Code Red. DJ Jazzy Jeff rejoined Will Smith as his DJ for Smith's double-platinum 1999 album, Willennium.
