Jill Goes Gold
Reporting by Mark Allwood Additional reporting by Keith Murphy
With the recent gold certification of Jill Scott's debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?, most fans know exactly who the Philadelphia soul singer is now, but many people don't realize that Jazzy Jeff's A Touch of Jazz production company handled most of the album.
Jeff, who has known Scott for about three years, rose to prominence in the '80s as a member of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, but has since formed his own Philly-based production company, A Touch of Jazz. Hookt.com caught up with Jeff recently, and the legendary DJ discussed his low-key role in the Jill Scott album.
"It's more about her. It's not so much about who did it," Jeff explained. "It's just if you feel the music, if you love it, that's the most important thing. We produced the whole album except for two songs."
Hookt.com also talked to Scott about her debut effort going gold more on word of mouth than major radio airplay and a big media ad campaign.
"It's an amazing feeling," explained Scott, who recently recovered from a hearing problem that forced her to sit out of The Roots' Okayplayer tour. "I feel like I gave something up that was worthwhile, and when you do that, people talk about it, and that's just a blessing. I really worked hard to make it something that I felt good about it, that I could look in the mirror and say, 'okay sister you're doing the right thing.' I'm blessed beyond speech. All I can do is just thank everybody so much for talking about it and allowing it to live in their hearts. I just wanted to give some soul food and it seems like its feeding people, so that feels great."
