The National Basketball Association All-Star game doesn't just come to a city.
It moves in for a while.
This year's edition of the superstar event takes place at the First Union Center, of course, but other activities are planned around the city during the week.
Starting Feb. 7, a series of "All Star Jam" concerts starring Philadelphia musicians are scheduled at the Electric Factory.
Coming back to town first is Will Smith, the city's biggest movie star/rapper, who takes the Electric Factory stage that evening.
Smith is riding high with his depiction of Muhammad Ali in the film "Ali." He is expected to be nominated for an Academy Award for his performance, and he already has made some best-of actor lists for 2001.
Smith doesn't have a new album ready for his fans, but he is more than willing to entertain his hometown with songs from his multi-platinum albums "Big Willie Style" and "Willennium." His upbeat, positive rapping made huge hits out of "Just the Two of Us," "Freakin' It" and "Will 2K" a few years ago.
And for those of you who want to hear some old school rap, D.J. Jazzy Jeff also will be on hand to help Smith perform the late 1980s and early 1990s hits "Parents Just Don't Understand," "A Nightmare on My Street," "Summertime," "Ring My Bell" and "Boom! Shake the Room."
This event also should be good publicity for Smith's upcoming summer film, "Men in Black 2," the sequel to the high-grossing movie "Men in Black."
If that isn't enough, consider that this show is called Will Smith and Friends.
Besides Jazzy Jeff, Smith will give stage time to Biz Markie - who went platinum in 1990 with the single "Just a Friend" - and Universal artist Mr. Cheeks. More rap sounds will come from Ludacris, the act that brought you the songs "Fatty Girl" and "Rollout" and the albums "Incognegro" and "Word of Mouth."
These artists have taken Philadelphia's "City of Brotherly Love" title to heart on the concert stage, so no one is headlining this show. Fans will just have to get there on time to see everything. A portion of the proceeds from the concert will benefit music education programs across the country.
The All-Star Jam concerts were the brainchild of Shawn Gee, who manages Jill Scott and The Roots, both of which are scheduled to perform later next week. Game maker Sega, which will provide video games for attendees to play, sponsors the shows. Among the arcade games on hand will be "NBA 2K2" and "NFL 2K2."
The Electric Factory is at Seventh and Willow streets in Philadelphia.
