Though he’s generally known as a house DJ who does mostly international gigs, Duplaix’s career began in the late ’80s as a hip-hop DJ, and then when he bought drum machines he progressed to beat maker. "I started [getting into] engineering at Third Story [in West Philadelphia] doing $99 demos back in the day. It was cool because I was just like the fast beat maker. I could help them make more money per day because the people they had programming were, you know, one track a day. I was doing, like, one track every ten minutes," Duplaix stresses. "So the $99 demos would turn into $300 an hour because I was doing it so quick, and it was a great business for them." Then in the ’90s he moved on to bigger things, starting the Touch of Jazz production company with friend Jazzy Jeff. "[Jeff] brought a world class level of experience of dealing with different people in studios to the table," recalls Duplaix. "He made it possible for all of us to basically experiment on a million dollars worth of equipment. That’s really what it was — a gigantic experiment."

Poyser came later (and the two eventually decided they would form Axis Music Group together). "We just experimented [on Jeff’s equipment]. It was pretty much me and James.… Cutting our teeth doing demos for $300, $200. Somebody could come in and get a $200 demo in a $1 million studio just because we were so hungry — trying to figure out how to make songs, how to make records, you know. It was a fascination with coaching artists to do vocals and getting great performances out of poor singers, that kind of stuff. Yeah, we were on it. We were doing our thing really, really seriously."
