Beware the show you mentioned, because this would have been taped during Run DMC's TOUGHER THAN LEATHER tour, which also included EPMD and Public Enemy. Not that their set wasn't good (although it did focus more on the Parents Just Don't Understand/Nightmare on My Street kind of story-stuff rather than the freestyle cutting of before), it just wasn't the same show taht we're talking about.

One note of interest: I saw the above tour in Dallas and it was my one and only time to shake hands with Will. Like all hip hop shows at the time, this one was badly planned and began hours after it was supposed to, so lots of us spent the time hanging out around the stage, trying to sneak in back..Anyway, Jeff tested his eqipment while Jeff hung out onstage talking to a few folks and the occasional fan. At one point Jeff hit the SP12 (smapling drum machine) and out burst a few seconds of this incredible beat built from Bob James' MARDI GRAS sample (Peter Piper, etc) and Ulta Magnetic's EGO TRIPPING horn stabs. We all went a little crazy, and Will, dressed in a huge YELLOW SHIRT, began to dance in the classic Kid n' Play style that was rocking at the time. Before they disappeared backstage, I held out my hand and got a quick pound from the Prince. I remember being a little disappointed, as it was Jeff I'd really wanteed to meet, but hell, who knew in 87 what Will would become?

And nope, the Union Square Show had nothing to do with the NMS. Jeff and Will were simply playing a small gig, capitalizing on their success that summer in New York with "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble", to be followed by their slightly less successful "Just One of Those Days"...That summer of '86 in NYC was pretty incredible - one of the other big records at the same time was Eric B and Rakim's "Eric B is President"/"My Melody", arguably one of the three or four greatest rap singles of all time....
