從敦煌本可看出此本是最後抄自---"悟真在嶺南漕溪山法興寺,現今傳授此法。"
惠昕本則多記錄一位---"悟真付圓會。"

這種以壇經作為傳承信物的特性,應該很快就起了變化。因為後世禪宗風行是以行思和懷讓這兩支傳承為主,而並非出自十大弟子門下。

所以到了惠昕本已經掃除了傳壇經為信物的特性。

惠昕本成為刊本,"誓修行。修行遭難不退,遇苦能忍,福德深厚,方授此法。如根性不堪,林量不得,雖求此法,違立不德者,不得妄付《壇經》。告諸同道者,令知蜜意。"敦煌本的這句話已經是多餘。所以惠昕本是沒有這些記錄

敦煌本雖有多番解釋,六祖是具有五祖的衣缽。但很明顯壇經前段惠能到黃梅得法這段是小說式記載,加之神會對六祖的記載比這段壇經小說式記載要少很多。

敦煌本後段更免提傳衣一事。
"弘忍第三十九,惠能自身當今受法第四十。”
大師言:“今日已後,遞相傳授,須有依約,莫失宗旨。”

惠昕本反而把它修改過來,又或者原文是衣,敦煌本故意抄成依?
北齊惠可。唐僧璨。唐道信。唐弘忍。吾今惠能。
師曰。吾今付法於汝。汝等於後。遞相傳授。須有稟承衣約。莫失宗旨。

因為惠能是沒有衣缽傳承,只有法傳承(惠能在黃梅是居士身,按道理是不可能弘忍把出家人的衣缽給他。何況佛教自古根本就沒有衣缽繼承這回事。)

當時歷史文獻上繼承弘忍的是頓教第六祖神秀。惠能六祖的身份是神會上京向政府爭取成為第七祖而得來的。

在南華寺只有相傳由唐中宗賜的金爛袈裟和缽,而沒有經上說弘忍傳的衣缽。

更後世的宗寶本對於衣缽的補記更是五花百門,大抵都是想找個圓口去解釋這個衣缽迷團。

惠能之能宏傳禪宗,在於它的覺悟。得衣缽大抵是十大弟子所編打的故事,因實又無衣又改為以壇經為印信。
禪宗的光大並沒有由當時六祖的十大弟子法海。志誠。法達。神會。智常。智道。志徹。志道。法珍。法如等人來傳承下去。門下抱的是一卷壇經代替衣來傳承。這個死物終於被人們所離棄而中斷。
反之行思及懷讓早就離開六祖而返到自己的地方去宏傳,他們所傳的一如六祖在黃梅所達到的覺悟。
故此禪家五宗公案都甚少以壇經作為參契。其脫離佛經範疇更大大超過六祖的思想。可惜的是宋末後禪宗已失人才,又重新回去佛經舊籬笆,回到迷信宗教怪力亂神的道路。單從敦煌本到惠昕本到宗寶本,恰恰可以看到禪宗這程變化的道路。
