...natalie still slept soundly, curled under mounds of quilts. alex, on the other hand, was wide awake. he had slept soundly, knowing how safe he was here, but required little sleep. he quietly arose from his bed, sensing the awake presence of others, but chose to ignore it. he silently slipped out the front door, minutes later arriving with a large bucket of water. somebody had to do it. he went to the fireplace carved into the middle of the tree in the middle of the room, (why the soldiers built a fireplace in wood still confused him), and hung the water above some coals. he went to a small cupboard and took out a match book, lighting the coals after smothering them in fuel. it was late autumn, and it would be getting cold soon. minutes later, the room was cozily warm, and the orange dawn of october flooded through the windows.
