Nikolas: Hey.

Luke: You up for company?

Nikolas: Sure, sure. Come on in.

Luke: Turns out I'm a little early for physical therapy on this bum knee. Well, you know, you don't look bad.

[Nikolas laughs]

Luke: I guess the operation was a success.

Nikolas: Yeah, yeah. Expected to make a full recovery, I guess.

Luke: Well, that's good.

Nikolas: Yeah. Well, I'm just trying to figure out exactly what that means -- a full recovery. I mean, how do you pick up the pieces of your life and move on without the woman that made it worthwhile to begin with? Look, I'm sorry. I know that's dicey territory for you. I apologize.

Luke: No, no -- no apology necessary. When it comes to your mother, you have nothing to ever apologize to me for.

Nikolas: Okay. Well, then, maybe you wouldn't mind if I ask, how did you? I witnessed some of the fallout from you losing Laura twice, and really, how did you bounce back from that?

Luke: Well, at first I didn’t. I didn't even want to bounce back. If I was going to go through the rest of my life without her, I just didn't think it was going to be worth it. So I spent a lot time in denial. I kept thinking, hoping she'd find her way back to me if I held her hand long enough or whispered just the right words in her ear. But closing your eyes to what is real only gets you so far. And eventually, truth is stronger than hope. I don't know, Nikolas. You just, uh, you get through it. You somehow learn to accept the loss, deal with the pain, and one day, before you know it, you're no longer standing on the edge of an abyss. Somehow, miraculously, you're on the other side.

Nikolas: Living through it, that I can grasp. But I don't know, finding love with someone else? I just -- I can't imagine that happening.

Luke: Well, I don't know. You know, you can't recreate love. What I felt for Laura -- what I will always feel for Laura, what you feel for Emily, that's a once-in-a-lifetime deal. But what I have with Tracy is once-in-a-lifetime, too. Love is always the first time, no matter how often it comes around. That's the miracle of it. You'll always hold Emily in your heart, Nikolas. But there is room in there to love again. I know it doesn't seem like that now, but unexpectedly, unbelievably, it'll happen. You're a young man. Anyway, I've got to go. I got a massage with my name on it downstairs.

Nikolas: Okay, thank for stopping by.

Luke: You take care of yourself.

Nikolas: You, too. Take care of that knee.

Luke: I'm trying.

Nikolas: Luke?

Luke: Hmm?

Nikolas: Thanks, really.
